In social media, timing is critical. Are you posting when your audience is most receptive? Is your content up to date and resonating with people? And in a digital world that moves at the speed of light, are you using trending topics and events to broaden your brand, reach and reputation?
Every day, there are multiple stories and events that dominate the news and start trending on social media. Remember the famous dress that was either blue and black or white and gold? How about the Ice Bucket Challenge? Or the Mannequin Challenge?
The process of monitoring trending topics is a key part of successfully operating in today’s big data-driven landscape. So how can you use trends like these to enhance engagement your brand experience? The key is to add a new dimension to the conversation, rather than just repeating what other people are saying.
And you can be as creative as you want. But here are three top tips:
- Use the correct hashtag to get more exposure
- Align the topic/event directly to your brand. It HAS to be relevant
- Try to create something entertaining, interesting and shareworthy
But before you rush out there and start researching, here’s a word of caution: before deciding whether or not to use a trending hashtag, try to find the original source of the hashtag. Additionally, ensure you read other posts in the discussion thread, just to be on the safe side. Due diligence is just as important as creativity.
